چکیده

UNLABELLED Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is important for the early diagnosis of hearing impairment in infants. AIM To compare ABR responses in full-term and premature infants; gender and ear were taken into account. METHODS A cross-sectional prospective cohort study was carried out. We evaluated 36 full-term and 30 premature infants that had passed the Transient Otoacoustic Emissions test, had type A tympanometric curves, and had no risk factor for hearing loss besides prematurity. The evaluations were done from the time of hospital discharge to the third month of life, and consisted of a clinical history, acoustic immittance testing and ABR evaluation. RESULTS The comparison of absolute and interpeak wave I, III and V latencies in right and left ears revealed a statistically significant difference at the interpeak I-III. There was no significant gender differences in the comparison of results. Significant difference in wave I, III and V absolute latencies at 80 dB and in wave V at 60 db and 20 db were observed in a comparison of absolute and interpeak latencies between full-term and premature infants. An inverse correlation was found between age and absolute latencies. CONCLUSIONS The maturity of the auditory system influences ABR responses in infants. To avoid misinterpretation of results, gestational age must be taken into account in the analysis of ABR in pediatric population.

Effect of Infant Prematurity on Auditory Brainstem Response at Preschool Age

Introduction: Preterm birth is a risk factor for a number of conditions that requires comprehensive examination. Our study was designed to investigate the impact of preterm birth on the processing of auditory stimuli and brain structures at the brainstem level at a preschool age.   Materials and Methods: An auditory brainstem response (ABR) test was performed with low rates of stimuli in 60 ch...

Auditory evoked potentials in premature and full-term infants.

UNLABELLED Accurate information about type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss are necessary for successful audiological early interventions. Auditory brainstem response with tone burst stimuli (TB ABR) and auditory steady-state response (ASSR) exams provide this information. AIM To analyze the clinical applicability of TB ABR and ASSR at 2 kHz in infants, comparing responses in full-t...

The auditory steady-state response: full-term and premature neonates.

Two studies were aimed at developing the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) for universal newborn hearing screening. First, neonates who had passed auditory brainstem response, transient evoked otoacoustic emission, and distortion-product otoacoustic emission tests were also tested with ASSRs using modulated tones that varied in frequency and level. Pass rates were highest (> 90%) for amplit...

Objective Peak-Detection in Complex Auditory Brainstem Response to /ba/, /da/, /ga/: A Novel Technique

Objectives: The result of auditory brainstem response is used worldwide for detecting hearing impairments or hearing aids. This study aimed to introduce the superiority of mathematical innovation algorithm toward subjective evaluation by an audiologist. The automatic algorithm method is encouraged for detecting the waves of Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), because it can reduce subjective eva...

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in late preterm infants at term-equivalent age.

To detect differences between late preterm and term infants in the brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) variables that predispose to neurodevelopmental abnormalities, 36 late preterm infants and 87 term infants were recruited. Data collected with the click level at 70 dB nHL were used for analysis. The latencies of waves I (2.74±0.20 msec vs. 2.74±0.42 msec), III (5.55±0.33 msec vs. 5.53±0...
